New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd remains in critical but stable condition after being shot on Sunday in New York City.
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. ET Sunday on West 38th Street near Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The New York Police Department said a 29-year-old man was found shot in the abdomen, but did not confirm his name. However, sources told the New York Post that Boyd was the shooting victim.
The Jets released a statement, confirming Boyd was involved in the shooting: “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”
Police said Boyd and a small group of friends were leaving the Asian fusion restaurant Sei Less when they were approached by another group at the popular eatery. After a dispute occurred, someone pulled out a gun and fired two shots.
The NYPD is searching for someone in connection with the shooting
According to the New York Post, witnesses said the shooter fled the scene in a BMW X6 SUV, followed by a second vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz Maybach. The outlet noted a lack of witness cooperation with authorities.
Boyd was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, going in and out of consciousness. He was in stable condition as of Monday, law enforcement sources told CBS News.
Police are still investigating the shooting and have not determined whether Boyd was the intended target. Authorities released images of a man wanted for questioning in connection with the incident, according to CBS News. No other injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made.
New York Mayor Eric Adams took to social media, sharing a statement, offering his prayers to Boyd and his family, while discussing his continued work to end gun violence in the city.
“I am praying for New York Jets player Kris Boyd and his loved ones. Although we’ve gotten shootings to historic lows in our city, we must continue to work to end gun violence. Too many young lives have been tragically altered and cut short by this epidemic,” he wrote in a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Who is Kris Boyd?
Boyd hasn’t played this season after being placed on season-ending injured reserve in August due to a shoulder injury, according to ESPN.
He signed with the Jets as a free agent in March, expecting to be a key special teams player under coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, Boyd was sidelined after a training camp injury.
The six-year NFL veteran previously played for the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans, where he was known as a special teams standout.
