Donald Trump has erroneously claimed that Walmart’s Thanksgiving dinner will be cheaper for Americans this year. Trump made his claim on social media on Thursday as he appeared to base his statement on a Walmart promotional deal he recently saw.
On his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump continued to compare himself to Joe Biden, claiming that the economy is doing much better under the current administration.
“2025 Thanksgiving dinner under Trump is 25% lower than 2024 Thanksgiving dinner under Biden, according to Walmart. My cost are lower than the Democrats on everything, especially oil and gas! So the Democrats ‘affordability’ issue is DEAD! STOP LYING!!!” the President wrote, per ABC News.
Trump then reiterated his claims at a White House event a short time later.
“They came out and they said Trump’s Thanksgiving dinner — same things — is 25% less than Biden’s … We are the ones that have done a great job on affordability, not the Democrats,” Trump said at the event, according to ABC News.
He also addressed the Democrats’ message during Tuesday’s elections, saying their statements about “affordability” are misleading.
What is the promotion Walmart is offering for Thanksgiving?
Walmart CEO John Furner spoke to GMA on October 21 and explained that the company is offering a special deal for Thanksgiving. Furner said the company is lowering the price of items by 25% as part of a holiday promotion. According to CNN, Walmart is offering this year’s Thanksgiving meal basket for less than $40, down from $55 last year.
While Trump is referencing Walmart’s promotion, the contents of the basket are different this year. Per CNN, Walmart’s 2025 Thanksgiving basket includes fewer items compared to 2024. This year’s basket does not include sweet potatoes and comes with one can of cream of mushroom soup.
Some of the other items that are not included in this year’s basket are miniature marshmallows, corn muffin mix, fresh onions and fresh celery stalks. However, there are also some new items Walmart is offering in its promotion this year. Those new items include three boxes of macaroni and cheese, a pre-made stuffing mix and fresh carrots.
While Walmart is offering a special deal, data across the country shows that grocery prices are still on the rise. In September, grocery prices increased by about 2.7% compared to last year, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The numbers also show that grocery prices increased by about 0.3% from August to September.
