Donald Trump‘s administration is still teasing the idea of giving out stimulus checks in the near future. NOTUS reporter Violet Jira talked about the latest development on the stimulus checks when she sat down for an interview with Fox5 on Thursday.
“I will say yesterday at the White House press briefing, Karoline Leavitt was asked, is the Trump administration committed to sending these checks to the American people? And their answer was yes,” Jira said, per Fo 5.
While Trump’s plan for the stimulus checks has been mostly vague, Jira said his recent social media posts add more clarity.
“Since that Truth Social post from Trump, we’ve gotten more details. For example, he said that the checks would be going to middle to low income people. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that would be individuals or families who make $100,000 or less,” Jira said. “So we’re getting more details about the plan, but as for whether or not this actually comes to fruition, it’s a bit difficult to tell. There’s a couple of factors at play that have made some people skeptical.”
Despite Trump’s promise to give out $2,000 tariff rebate checks, financial experts say the plan is unrealistic.
“It’s highly unlikely there is some sort of stimulus check sent out next year. I would be pretty shocked,” Scott Lincicome, Cato Institute’s vice president of general economics, said in an interview with CNN.
Lincicome adds that it would cost up to $600 billion to send out checks to nearly all Americans.
“I find it extremely implausible that Republican budget hawks are just going to be okay with blowing another $300 billion to $600 billion,” Lincicome said.
What did Donald Trump say about revenue generated from tariffs?
In his social media post on Sunday, Trump continued to push the idea of using tariff revenue for tariff dividends.
“A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone,” Trump wrote in his post, according to Fox 5.
Trump also continues to tout the U.S. as the richest nation with the lowest inflation rate. Additionally, Trump said the country is paying down its $37 trillion national debt.
When was the last round of stimulus checks issued?
The IRS issued the last round of stimulus checks for economic relief in 2021. Three years later, the agency announced plans to issue automatic payments to taxpayers who didn’t file for the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 returns. Those automatic payments to eligible people were sent from December 2024 to January 2025.
Taxpayers still had a chance to claim the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit by filing their 2021 tax return before April 15, 2025. No extensions were available for the deadline.
