Stanley has recalled 2.6 million popular travel mugs in the United States after dozens reported loose tops causing burn injuries.

The Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs, two of the company’s top products, have been recalled, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission in a statement Thursday.

Multiple injuries reported in the U.S.

Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the United States, of the lids detaching during use — resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two injuries in the United States, CPSC said.

The recall includes 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes with polypropylene lids. Despite being double-walled, the lids can shrink when exposed to heat or pressure, causing them to detach and cause a burn hazard.

Stanley speaks out following recall

For safety reasons, consumers should immediately stop using the recalled travel mugs and contact Stanley for a free replacement lid, including shipping, the government agency said.

The cups were sold at Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, Walmart and other stores nationwide and online from June 2016 through December 2024, and they were priced between $20 and $50 (depending on which model a customer purchased).

“At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life,” the Seattle-based company said in a Facebook statement.

Stanley’s popularity and financial growth

Blavity reported that the Stanley Cups became an internet sensation on TikTok earlier in 2024, with the “Quencher H2.0” garnering millions of views as content creators reviewed the product.

The #Stanley hashtag alone had nearly 3 billion views at the time.

The 111-year-old company saw a massive increase in revenue over the last five years, from $74 million in 2019 to $750 million in 2023, per Forbes.
