Jason Washington was shot and killed by a Portland State University officer outside of The Cheerful Tortoise bar on June 30.
The 45-year-old grandfather and Navy veteran tried making peace by breaking up a fight when his gun fell out of its holster.
A witness was recording what she thought was a typical fight when an officer shot Washington.
“I was so distraught that I just saw what was on my phone and tried to keep the peace until it got out of hand, and then I went and hid because I didn’t know who was shooting,” she told KATU News.
The video below shows 30 seconds of cell phone footage of the incident leading up to Washington's death. The video captured a few seconds of the brawl before one of the PSU officers yelled "Everybody get the f**k back! Get the f**k back!" A few seconds later, an officer shot.
Zachary Walker, a friend of those involved in the fight Washington tried to break up, says the shooting was "unnecessary." Walker affirmed he never felt threatened by Washington. But, obviously, the police did?
"There are a lot of people in Portland grieving right now," said Alyssa LeCesne, a friend of Washington, reported The Oregonian.
Over the weekend, friends and family wrote messages on a cement pillar near the shooting scene to pay homage to Washington.
Several messages are written onto this pillar near PSU where campus police shot and killed a man early Friday. Family and friends appear to have written here too, including his daughter. #LiveOnK2 pic.twitter.com/r2TVxoxNwC— Keaton Thomas (@keaton_thomas) June 30, 2018
A message from one of his daughters read, “I love you Dad! You didn’t deserve this. Tell Papa I miss him too. Kai Loves you!”
The shooting remains under investigation.
