Macy’s is closing more than a dozen stores across the nation in the coming months. In a statement to Axios, the department store said the closures will allow the company to improve its business at the remaining locations.

Where are the Macy’s stores that are closing?

Macy’s has announced that 14 stores will close in several states. The closures include two locations in the California cities of La Mesa and Tracy. Per the company, the Grossmont Center location in La Mesa and the West Valley Mall store in Tracy are the two places that are closing in California. Two more stores are also closing in the New Jersey cities of Livingston and Ramsey. Those two closing stores are located at the Livingston Mall in Livingston and the Interstate Shopping Center in Ramsey.

More closures are expected in Atlanta, Georgia; Glen Burnie, Maryland; Grandville, Michigan; Saint Cloud, Minnesota and Newington, New Hampshire. Additional closures are also coming to Amherst, New York; Raleigh, North Carolina; Tarentum, Pennsylvania; Corpus Christi, Texas and Tukwila, Washington.

Macy’s plans to have clearance sales as the stores begin to close in the first quarter of 2026, Syracuse.com reported.

Why is Macy’s closing dozens of stores?

The Macy’s closures are part of the company’s “Bold New Chapter” plan, which was revealed in 2024. The company announced its plans to close 500 locations by the end of 2026 and revamp “350 go-forward Macy’s locations,” Syracuse.com reported.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc., said in a statement, per WZZM 13.

In the Tarentum region of Pennsylvania, shoppers talked about how the closure will affect them. Naydo Nance, a Pittsburgh resident, said she may have to drive far to shop because of the closure.

“I’m petite, and I can shop for mens’ clothing and cologne at Macy’s,” Nance told TribLive. “I don’t really do any shopping online — I’m ‘young-old-fashioned.’ If they close this one, I’d have to go out to Ross Park Mall, and I don’t want to do that.”

Tisha Fiore, another shopper, said she doesn’t go to Macy’s often, but she likes what they offer.

“I don’t come here all the time; it depends on what I need,” Fiore said, per TribLive. “But they have a good selection of makeup that you can’t always find elsewhere. I think Macy’s has more up-to-date stuff as opposed to a Burlington or Marshall’s.”
