Rep. Jasmine Crockett is opening up about a scary encounter she had at her office. The Texas Democrat told her followers on social media that a person appeared at her office making “white supremacist threats and hand gestures.” Crockett thanked police for their swift response to the incident, but also called out President Donald Trump for normalizing white supremacy.
“We’re living in a time where political violence is being fueled from the very top,” Crockett wrote via Instagram. “When the President of the United States spreads hate and lies, when he targets his political opponents, when he openly calls for the death of sitting Members of Congress, he is putting a literal target on our backs. The President should be committed to unity, not more division.”
Crockett said the incident is yet another example of the threats she’s continually facing, but she vowed to remain resilient.
“I will not be intimidated. I will not be silenced,” she said. “I will continue to show up for the people of Texas’ 30th Congressional District. But we cannot pretend that this is normal. When leaders promote hate, hate shows up sometimes right at our door.”
Trump recently suggested that Democratic lawmakers should be ‘arrested and put on trial’
When Trump recently responded to a video encouraging military members to stop following illegal orders from the government, he said Democratic lawmakers are showing “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR” and that should be “punishable by DEATH!”
“Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand,” Trump said, per the BBC. “An example MUST BE SET.”
Trump also reshared a post from another person who said, “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!”
What did Donald Trump say to clarify his comments about punishing Democrats by death?
After facing wide backlash for saying Democratic lawmakers should be punished by death, Trump tried to explain himself. Speaking with Fox News on Friday, Trump said he was “not threatening death.”
“I’m not threatening death, but I think they’re in serious trouble,” Trump told Fox News, per the BBC.
He also doubled down on his comment about Democrats showing “seditious behavior.”
“If you look at sedition, that’s a form of, a very strong form of being a traitor. It’s a terrible thing to say, I must tell you,” Trump said.
