Original Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron is making his way back to the ABC reality competition show.
Deadline reports that Bergeron, who left the series in 2019, will return as a guest judge for the show’s 20th anniversary airing on Nov. 11. Bergeron talked to Good Morning America about returning to the series, saying, “It feels really good. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Why did Tom Bergeron exit ‘Dancing with the Stars’?
Bergeron shocked fans of Dancing with the Stars in 2019 when he decided to leave the series after criticizing the show for inviting politically divisive contestants, such as former press secretary Sean Spicer, who served during Donald Trump’s first presidency.
Deadline reports that Bergeron told former Dancing with the Stars cast member Cheryl Burke that he had met with the producers about who to invite on the show, and felt he came away from the meetings with the understanding that the series would be an escape from the political strife that was happening in the country. When he learned that Spicer would be a contestant, he said the decision “really pissed me off.”
He also recounted the story around the time of his departure, writing on social media at the time that he felt he had left the working lunch “convinced we were in agreement.”
“Subsequently (and rather obviously), a decision was made to, as we often say in Hollywood, ‘go in a different direction,'” he continued, according to Entertainment Weekly. “…It is in prerogative of the producers, in partnership with the network, to make whatever decisions they feel are in the best long-term interests of the franchise. We can agree to disagree, as we do now, but ultimately it’s their call.”
What he says is ‘Dancing’ at its best’
He also told Entertainment Weekly in an interview around the same time that he didn’t know if Dancing with the Stars would become a partisan show, saying, “My preference–it’s not my call, other people book the show–would have been to avoid any political lightning rods. I think Dancing at its best is an oasis away from all the divisiveness and all the stuff that we are wrestling with right now. And so that was a call they made, and my job as host, to the best of my ability, is to be Switzerland for those two hours…For the other 166 hours a week, it’s pretty clear where I stand politically.”
Bergeron’s departure paved the way for the series to hire Alfonso Ribeiro as host, who had been with the series as a winning contestant before landing the hosting spot.
