The FDA, which recalled several spice products last July, is now adding several cinnamon brands to the list. In a statement released last week via NBC Chicago, the FDA said consumers are advised to “throw away and not to buy these ground cinnamon products.” Per the statement, “exposure to these products may be unsafe.”
What are the recalled cinnamon brands?
The FDA has recalled a total of 16 cinnamon brands distributed to various states, including multiple products sold at stores across New York and Connecticut. The distributors named in the recall are Roshni Foods, Haitai Inc. USA, EUREKA INC. U.S.A., SLR Food Distribution, Inc, Spicy World of USA, IHA Beverage Commerce, Asli Fine Foods, El Chilar Apopka, Moran Foods, Raja Foods, Greenbrier International, Inc., MAMTAKIM, Inc., ALB-USA Enterprises Inc., Advance Food International, Inc, American Spices, La Frontera Imports.
Several cinnamon brands were recalled within the past year
An increasing number of cinnamon brands have been recalled in recent years because researchers have determined that the product contain a high level of toxic metal. Per Consumer Reports, many of the recalled products were purchased from grocery stores in the Northeast.
“This product has a long shelf life. Consumers should check their homes and discard this product,” the FDA said in a statement, according to NBC 5 Chicago.
Consumers are also advised to visit a doctor if they think they may have been exposed. Per the FDA, “most people have no obvious immediate symptoms of lead exposure.”
“The potential for adverse health effects from consuming food contaminated with lead vary depending on the level of lead in the food; age of the consumer; length, amount, and frequency of exposure to lead in the food; and other exposures to different sources of lead,” the FDA added.
People who are exposed to toxic products may feel a wide range of symptoms from abdominal pain to nausea and vomitting. Diarrhea, constipation, dehydration, headache and exhaustion are also symptoms.
