British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua sustained minor injuries around 11 a.m. on Monday in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two other passengers, according to local police via ESPN.

The former world heavyweight champion was traveling in a Lexus SUV. According to witnesses, the crash happened along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” a statement from Ogun State Police Command read.

“He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention,” the statement continued. “Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.”

Anthony Joshua was seen being rescued from a wrecked vehicle

Photos circulating on social media show Joshua being rescued from the vehicle while appearing in pain.

“Early indications are he is OK but waiting on further official news,” a rep for Joshua told ESPN.

Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo told ESPN that the cause of the crash seems to stem from a “burst tire on AJ’s vehicle, which caused the driver to lose control and the vehicle to swerve into the stationary truck parked along the road.”

Ogunlowo added, “For now, I’m aware of two fatalities and Joshua himself has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.”

In an interview with Daily Mail Sport, as ESPN reported, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said he learned about the crash while vacationing with his family.

“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images,” Hearn told The Daily Mail Sport. “We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”

Anthony Joshua recently defeated Jake Paul in their heavyweight bout

As Blavity reported, Anthony Joshua and YouTube-turned-boxing star Jake Paul each earned about $93 million after their fight, which was broadcast live on Netflix on Saturday.

According to the The Daily Mail, about 37% of Joshua’s earnings must be paid to the IRS because he is a United Kingdom resident. Joshua gave kudos to Paul after his victory, which was broadcast live on Netflix on Dec. 22, 2025. The fight itself occurred on Dec. 19.

“Jake Paul has done really well tonight, I want to give him his props. He got up, time and time again. It was difficult in there for him, but he kept on trying to find a way through,” Joshua after the match-up, according to the Daily Mail. “You have to give Jake his respect for trying, trying and trying. But he came up against a real fighter tonight that’s had a 15-month lay-off.”

Although he came out ahead, Joshua was hard on himself, saying it wasn’t his “best performance.”

“The end goal was to get Jake Paul, pin him down and hurt him,” he said. That has been the request and that was on my mind. Took a bit longer than expected but the right hand found the destination.”
