Cea Weaver, New York City’s new director for the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, is being targeted with insults from Republicans after her old tweets resurfaced online. One of the resurfaced posts, which Weaver wrote in 2019, shows her expressing her views on homeownership.

“Private property including and kind of ESPECIALLY homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy,” Weaver said in her post, which was shared on Libs of TikTok, a conservative X account.

Weaver is receiving backlash from many of the same people who bashed Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his progressive views. As Weaver’s old posts resurfaced online, people are saying that she promotes communist policies. They’re also accusing her of being anti-white while insulting her appearance — forcing Weaver to deactivate her X account.

According to Newsweek, Weaver is also getting backlash for another old post in which she said “for centuries, we’ve really treated property as an individualized good and not a collective good.”

“It will mean that families, especially white families, are going to have a different relationship to property than the one we currently have,” Weaver also said in that post, according to Newsweek.

Who is Mayor Mamdani’s tenant advisor Cea Weaver?

Weaver is widely recognized for her work in advocating for tenant protections and regulating rent, Fox 5 reported. As he stepped into his role as mayor, Mamdani named Weaver as director of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, a position responsible for addressing unsafe housing conditions.

Until now, Weaver has been serving as Housing Justice for All’s executive director. She also worked with the New York State Tenant Bloc, another organization advocating for tenant rights.

In 2019, Weaver advocated for the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act, which prevents landlords from using loopholes to significantly raise rent.
