UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown Wednesday morning.
Thompson was reportedly outside the hotel before the shooting
According to The Associated Press, Thompson was outside the hotel around 6:45 a.m. ET when a shooter shot him in the chest. He was scheduled to speak at parent company UnitedHealth Group’s investor day, beginning at 8 a.m. ET at the hotel, CNBC reported. Thompson was transported to a hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. Authorities said the attack appears targeted, but they haven’t yet determined a motive.
The suspect was described as a white male wearing a black hoodie and pants while carrying a gray backpack. He used a firearm with a silencer.
No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests had been made, and the investigation remained ongoing.
A food cart vendor near the Hilton said he did not hear any gunshots but noticed a significant police presence and helicopters circling the area, per CNBC and NBC News.
Thompson is survived by his wife, Paulette Thompson, and their two children.
Thompson’s wife said he received death threats
Thompson said her husband had received death threats.
“Yes, there had been some threats basically I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details,” she told NBC News. “I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”
She said the New York Police Department informed her that the shooting was “a planned attack.”
Other outlets reported she mentioned, “I can’t really give a thoughtful response right now. I just found this out and I’m trying to console my children.”
UnitedHealthcare is the largest private health insurer in the U.S.

UnitedHealth Group canceled its investor day following the shooting.
“I’m afraid that we — some of you may know we’re dealing with very serious medical situation with one of our team members,“ Chief Executive Officer Andrew Witty said during the investor day, according to a transcript, per CNBC. “And as a result, I’m afraid we’re going to have to bring to a close the event today, which I’m sure you’ll understand.”
