High school seniors have had it rough thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has slashed any plans for graduations, proms and senior festivities at schools across the country. 

But Roberta Hannah, a senior at Springfield High School of Science and Technology in Massachusetts, received some good news amid the coronavirus crisis.

The stellar student managed to get into all eight Ivy League schools and told local news outlet WHSM that she decided on Columbia University.

“Originally, I was only going to apply to three, but then my mom and my sister were like, ‘You should just apply to all eight,’ so I didn’t really have a choice. I was really anxious getting up to the day, and then I started opening the letters, and I was like 'Oh, I keep seeing yes,’” Hannah said.


She got acceptance letters from four schools earlier this year, and by March 26, the number increased to all eight schools. 

Hannah told WHSM that she wants to focus her efforts on biochemistry and African American studies once she gets to Columbia University in the fall. 

The all-star student attributed her success to her sister and her mother, who did not go to college but pushed her to excel in school.  

“Last year, I took four AP classes, but up until then, I was mostly in honors classes or pre-AP, and so last year, I took four AP classes, and this year I’m taking seven AP exams," Hannah said.

"So my goal is to be a medicinal chemist, but with making medicine and kind of the one researching it. I want my focus to be on increasing accessibility and making the medicine more affordable. I think because of the fact my mom didn’t go to college, she always pushed us a little extra hard,” she added.

In addition to her studies, Hannah is also a star athlete. She said her mother insisted that she push herself to get into as many schools as possible.  

“I just knew because it is my child, and I know her gifts, and I basically made her apply to all the schools,” said Valerie Williams, Hannah’s mom.

Even though most graduation ceremonies are canceled, former First Lady Michelle Obama recently announced that she is teaming up with YouTube to broadcast a virtual graduation on June 6 with the help of her husband, former President Barack Obama, as Blavity previously reported.
