Golf is getting a high-tech makeover, and two of the sport’s biggest legends, Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy, are leading the charge with a new indoor golf league that will tee off on Tuesday.
TGL is the latest venture from TMRW Sports, the brand co-founded by Woods and McIlroy, which aims to attract a younger audience. CNN reported that the league’s games will be held at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, which has a capacity of 1,500, and will be broadcast on ESPN. TGL is set to offer fans a unique and dynamic experience.
Tuesday night’s opening match will feature Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Xander Schauffele from New York Golf Club against Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark, and Ludvig Åberg from The Bay Golf Club.
What is TGL?
TGL is a primetime golf league in partnership with the PGA Tour. It combines cutting-edge golf technology with live competition. USA Today and the official website reported that the league will feature a shot clock, timeouts, and team and individual match play. Teams will compete in two-hour matches across 15 custom-designed holes, combining virtual and real-world elements.
The league comprises six teams, with four players on each team. Each team from a different city will compete at the SoFi Center, providing fans a high-tech experience throughout the season.
TGL features a format that includes team golf, match play, the hammer, league structure, and the postseason. Each level showcases the competitive nature of the players and teams, with the postseason determining the best three-player team to end the season.
‘Tiger and I have been a part of this from Day 1’
McIlroy shared his thoughts on TGL, emphasizing how it elevates the sport by integrating advanced technology.
“We have teams, obviously, there’s a lot of technology involved, trying to bring it into the digital era,” he told ESPN. “A lot of things that we’ve taken from other sports like a shot-clock, a timeout, things that you don’t see in regular golf; trying to appeal to that bigger sports audience out there.”
Mcllroy also confirmed that he and Woods have made TGL a reality for golf and sports enthusiasts.
“Tiger and I have been a part of this from Day 1, and whenever you see the concepts and the renderings you think, ‘Yeah, that looks really cool,'” McIlroy told ESPN. “But until you actually stand in here (the SoFi Center) and you see what they’ve been able to do, I think the scale of it is the thing, for me, that blows my mind.”
