New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery from an alleged incident on Dec. 2.

Stefon Diggs denies the allegations against him

A motion hearing was held on Tuesday morning at Dedham District Court in Massachusetts. A judge is deciding whether to allow the public access to the police report, given that limited information is publicly available, according to The Boston Globe.

Diggs’s attorney, David Meier, communicated that the 32-year-old athlete denies the allegations and said that the allegations stem from a financial dispute that went awry.

“They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur,” Meier said, ESPN reported. “The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: they are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction. Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law.”

Stefon Diggs’ defense team is ‘working on a monetary resolution’

Judge Jeanmarie Carroll took a motion to impound the case documents under advisement, and the defense team said they are working on a monetary resolution to the incident, according to the Boston Globe.

Another attorney for Diggs, Michael R. DiStefano, shared with Judge Carroll his concerns that there would be “substantial risk of widespread publicity” that could affect the case without impoundment, “given the nature of the situation and the individuals involved.”

The Patriots released a statement, confirming that they are aware of the situation and fully support Diggs.

“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time,” the organization said in a statement obtained by ESPN’s NFL Nation reporter Mike Reiss.

NFL: ‘We have no further comment at this time’

Diggs is scheduled for an arraignment on Jan. 23, which is just two days before the AFC Championship Game, according to CBS Sports.

“We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” the NFL said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this time.”

The allegations come ahead of when the Patriots close out the 2025 regular season against the Miami Dolphins, per CBS Sports. Diggs, who is in his first year of a three-year $69 million contract, is a crucial part of the team’s success as they prepare a postseason run for the first time since 2021.

Stefon Diggs is in the middle of a lawsuit with reality star Mulan Hernandez

Back in February, as Blavity reported, Diggs accused reality star Mia Jones, known as Mulan Hernandez, of assault and extortion in a civil lawsuit. Diggs alleged that Hernandez punched him several times, threatened him with weapons and damaged his personal items, including an expensive watch. Diggs is seeking $1 million in damages, and his attorney, Kent Schaffer, said they had a “casual relationship.”

In October, Hernandez filed a countersuit against Diggs, accusing him of assault and trying to keep her silent with a non-disclosure agreement. She’s seeking between $250,000 and $1 million in damages, claiming Diggs punched her in the back of the head in June 2024. Both cases are ongoing.
