The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled several types of shredded cheese packs sold at retailers like Target, Walmart and Aldi. The recall concerns dozens of brands produced by Great Lakes Cheese Co., Inc. and distributed to over 31 states.

Why was there a shredded cheese recall?

The FDA issued a recall for nearly 236,000 shredded cheese cases, which have sell-by dates ranging from January to March 2026. Each case includes between four and 12 bags of cheese, according to CBS News.

The FDA issued a recall on Oct. 3 over potential metal fragments, which pose a risk of internal injury if consumed. The risk level was updated to Class II on Tuesday. It means that serious health consequences are “remote” but still present a possibility of temporary or reversible effects, according to Health.

The recall concerns cheese sold in 31 states and Puerto Rico. The list of affected states is as follows: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

What shredded cheese items were recalled?

The recall concerns dozens of brands prepared by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. It includes Low-Moisture Part-Skim Mozzarella Shredded Cheese, Italian Style Shredded Cheese Blend, Pizza Style Shredded Cheese Blend, Mozzarella and Provolone Shredded Cheese Blend and Mozzarella and Parmesan Shredded Cheese Blend.
