In all the excitement over new original scripted series premiering during the 2016/2017 TV season (especially where black talent is concerned, given this blog’s interests), this one doesn’t seem to be getting as much attention as the others; maybe because it’s going to be on TBS, instead of one of the major networks that tend to get more press write-ups, and also one doesn’t immediately associate good original, scripted drama or comedy series with TBS.
But maybe that’ll change with “People of Earth,” a new original dramedy series that will premiere on TBS on Halloween day, October 31.
“People of Earth” stars Wyatt Cenac as a skeptical journalist named Ozzie Graham, who investigates a support group for alien abductees, to write about the members’ supposed alien encounters. The more he digs into their oddball claims, the more he realizes a semblance of truth to their stories and possibly even signs that point to his own alien abduction. The onetime outsider now finds himself a part of an eclectic group of misfits, all the while struggling with the idea of knowing that life could exist beyond our world.
It reads like original, quirky fun; rare for a black actor to be leading.
Cenac is joined in front of the camera by another black actor in Da’Vine Joy Randolph, as well as Ana Gasteyer, Oscar Nuñez, Michael Cassidy, Alice Wetterlund, Luka Jones, Brian Huskey, Nancy Lenehan, Tracee Chimo, Björn Gustafsson and Ken Hall.
TBS ordered 10 half-hour episodes of “People of Earth” which is produced by Conan O’Brien’s production shingle, Conaco LLC, in association with Warner Horizon Television.
It was created by David Jenkins, who serves as series co-executive producer.
If you’re curious about this one, and would like to check out early (especially if you don’t have cable TV), before its October 31 premiere on TBS, you’re in luck, because the network has released the first episode of “People of Earth” online, for free! Watch it in full below.
