Fans of Stranger Things are ending Volume 2 of the fifth and final season with some questions.

One of those questions: is Kali, aka Eight (Linnea Berthelsen), actually evil? Let’s break down what we know.

Kali was trapped in the Upside Down version of the Hawkins Lab. Simultaneously, the government has been utilizing her blood to try to create more kids with powers like Eleven’s. Kali is trying to convince Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) that the only way to stop Vecna, aka Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower), and keep the Hawkins Lab doctors from using both of their blood to create more superpowered children is for them to die.

However, fans and characters alike don’t trust Kali’s intentions. Many fans have a theory that she will double-cross Eleven, as other characters like Hopper don’t believe Kali truly means well.

Kali’s powers provide some reasoning for people’s wariness. Kali has power over illusions, and she can also create images in other people’s minds. This opens up the question of whether she’s creating a projection when she’s talking to Eleven. Is her ability to convince Eleven that they both should die part of a bigger con?

Is Kali’s lack of an accent a continuity error or confirmation of the theory in plain sight?

Speaking of illusions, is Kali’s changing accent part of an illusion? As TikTok user @duszek.km pointed out, Kali had a British accent when she was introduced in Season 2, but now she has an American accent. Is it a continuity error or something fans should pay attention to as a possible sign of Kali’s trickery?

TikTok user @Courtneyyyy also wrote in the comments section of @duszek’s post how Kali’s nose now bleeds from the right, when it bled from the left in Season 2. Other commenters also mentioned how they hope the differences are purposeful and not just errors in between seasons.

One commenter, @Mollyy, wrote that they read about a theory “that [K]ali is making an illusion of herself with her powers and it’s not actually her.” Another, @nunya, wrote that “it’s not actually [K]ali, they all have parts of Henry’s powers so part of his power is hers.”

“[I] think Henry is projecting the image and doesn’t know about her accent and [El] is just not noticing,” they continued, adding that it could also be the possibility that the Duffer Brothers just forgot.

What the Duffer Brothers have said about Kali’s role in the final chapter

Regardless, the Duffer Brothers have said that Kali figures into the final chapter of Stranger Things in a way no one will see coming. As Matt Duffer told SFX (as Cosmopolitan reported), “Kali shifts things a lot for Eleven, and I think it’ll be surprising for people to see how she ultimately fits into the story.”
