The long-gestating Snowfall spinoff, starring original series stars Isaiah John and Gail Bean, has officially been ordered to series at FX.

The still-untitled drama series is from Malcolm Spellman and the original Snowfall producers Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London and Trevor Engelson. After being in development since the parent series first wrapped, it officially received a pilot order back in March.

Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith and Simmie Sims III also star in the project, which also had a first-look image released with news of the series order.

What will the ‘Snowfall’ spinoff be about?

The logline is as follows: Set in ‘90s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict strives to take West Coast rap mainstream — while gang wars erupt and record labels move to exploit hip hop culture for their own gain.

“This new series takes us back to one of the most formative eras in music with the birth of the West Coast rap revolution,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment. “We worked with Malcolm Spellman on the documentary series Hip Hop Uncovered and he has encyclopedic knowledge of this material. This is a breakout starring role for Gail Bean and, as always, Isaiah John is terrific along with the ensemble cast. Snowfall was one of the most successful FX dramas ever and we’re excited that Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme and other veterans of the Snowfall creative team are on board.”

Snowfall ran for six seasons from 2017 to 2023, was created by the late John Singleton, and focused on a group of characters during the ’80’s crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles, primarily Damson Idris’ Franklin Saint. Carter Hudson, Emily Rios, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Michael Hyatt, Amin Joseph and Angela Lewis also starred.

The series is produced by FX Productions.
