It would appear that Ava DuVernay’s "Selma" will
have its full feature length premiere tomorrow night at the AFI Fest in Los
Angeles, and not the 30-minute preview that was previously announced by the festival.
AFI did send out a press release over the weekend saying that it would announce a "surprise" film that will be screened on Tuesday night. It looks like this could be the one.
The announcement
was made through a Twitter exchange between DuVernay and co-producer of the
film Oprah Winfrey, that follows:
.@AVAETC have you seen all the great response to SELMA trailer?
— Oprah Winfrey (@Oprah) November 10, 2014
.@AVAETC can’t believe you did the impossible and locked that picture. So it’s Done,DoNe??

RT @Oprah: .@AVAETC Yes! Pretty much done! We locked picture on Friday night! Just finishing the sound mix tonight! We’re ready!
— Ava DuVernay (@AVAETC) November 10, 2014
@AVAETC looks like you MADE IT! I know you were trying to get ready for AFI viewing this week. I’ll be there with my SELMA dancin shoes on.
— Oprah Winfrey (@Oprah) November 10, 2014
So, @Oprah. I think I want to show the whole film. Not just a 30 minute preview. Why wait, right? Let’s DO this! Hot off the presses! Yes?
— Ava DuVernay (@AVAETC) November 10, 2014
@AVAETC I always thought that was why you were working 20hr days to show the WHOLE film. Congratulations

No doubt
after the screening at the AFI Fest, the film will be screened for
the media and Academy Awards voting members, which means word will soon get out
on whether "Selma" does have the potential to be a real Oscar contender.
