An Illinois-based sweets company has expanded the recall of two types of holiday snacks sold at grocery stores nationwide due to potential allergy concerns, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration said.
Why did the company recall the holiday bark brand?
Silvestri Sweets Inc. of Geneva, Illinois, initially announced the recall of two types of Choceur-branded Holiday Barks just days before Thanksgiving, according to the original news release. An extended recall was issued on Tuesday, as shared in an updated news release.
The company voluntarily issued the recall on its 5-ounce bags of holiday snacks because they may contain undeclared allergens, including pecans and wheat.
The Choceur-branded Cookie Butter Holiday Bark may contain undeclared pecans, and the Choceur-branded Pecan, Cranberry & Cinnamon Holiday Bark may have undeclared wheat in it, the FDA said.
Anyone who may be allergic to pecans run “the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the federal agency said.

Information consumers should know about the recall
The FDA said no illnesses have been reported regarding the holiday snack items. However, the expanded recall began after an investigation revealed that the Pecan, Cranberry & Cinnamon Holiday Bark product had been packaged in Cookie Butter Holiday Bark packages, resulting in an undeclared pecans.
Further investigation revealed that a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging process caused the problem.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products are urged to dispose of them. For more information about the recall, consumers can contact Silvestri Sweets at 1-630-232-2500 – M-F 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CST, or via email at customerservice@carousel-candies.com.
