Twitter can turn anything into a meme.
If you grew up in the 2000s, you might have watched Cartoon Network's Ed, Edd n Eddy. The show featured a character named Rolf, who was an immigrant from “the old country” who ran with the Eds and wasn’t afraid to call out white foolishness.
A picture of the character as a young black man gazing out of a window hit the internet, and everyone has been acting a fool, creating endless memes riffing on the image, Complex reports.
According to BuzzFeed, artist Elijah Rutland is responsible for the first black Rolf meme:
People really out here thinking that I make free art…. pic.twitter.com/taX89jSLNH

Rutland has a history of race-bending cartoon characters from a variety of shows, including Adventure Time and Dragon Ball Z, but Rolf is his first viral sensation.
“The next thing I knew, people were sharing it and editing it with new skin tones, hairstyles and captions, so all of this is new to me because I’ve never had anything that has gone viral before," Rutland said.
Poor Rolf! He became like 200 different people these past two weeks. pic.twitter.com/vstyFFO4Tt
