What better time to highlight even more Black excellence than during Women’s History Month? Meet Kamaya Walker, an Atlanta native who first arrived at North Carolina A&T State University in 2019. At that time she began doing natural hairstyles for men and women on campus. She was also a Mass Media Production student. One day a student recommended that she should merge her two talents together and film her hair work. From that recommendation, Kamera Ready Productions was born. When the pandemic interrupted campus life worldwide, Walker took a break from filming her hair work and returned back to her hometown. She then transitioned into producing her own personal short film work.
From this work, she was able to become a Production Management Intern for Freeform and an HBCU in LA Finalist in 2021. Within her internship, Walker was able to become an in-person Production Assistant for the Freeform show Single Drunk Female in Atlanta. When in-person classes resumed and her internship ended, Walker continued to utilize her production company for student campaigns for the Student Government Association, local businesses, and fellow student short-film work. However, one piece of film struck the university in particular. Walker said “My mentor used to tell me to just create, create, create. When I get anxious, I create. So, I made a commercial for the Aggie Dining App where it would tell me what they had a week in advance. I used to hate getting to the café and not liking what they had, so I had to eat the pizza or the burgers. So I made this video so my friends would see how convenient this is”.
After Walker posted the commercial video promoting the app on her Instagram page, a representative from the Aggie Dining office offered her a photo and video internship. From her visual content, she has been able to garner the student body’s attention about building higher morale and an awareness of the food program through her innovative approach to storytelling about the tales of Williams Dining Hall.
In her role, Walker has been able to not only create content for Aggie Dining social media, but she has been able to even create content for on-campus events such as the homecoming halftime show. “I make videos for social media sometimes, but making a video for a grand audience with alumni there was crazy”. Kamaya Walker is a visionary and the quintessential definition of the word initiative. A young lady with a bright future, Kamaya Walker continues to multitask as a great example of why we celebrate Women’s History Month.
