President Donald Trump spent the majority of his weekend calling for an NFL boycott and the firing of players who protested against police brutality and racism all the while the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico continues to deal with the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
On Friday, Sept. 22, Trump went on a rant at a rally in Huntsville, Alabama demanding that NFL owners fire players who kneeled during the national anthem.
"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say: 'Get that son of a b—- off the field right now. Out. He's fired. He's fired,"' said Trump.
His inflammatory remarks were met with defiance as a 100 or more players took a knee or protested on Sunday. And to add insult to injury, Cowboys owner and Trump supporter Jerry Jones knelt with his players prior to the national anthem on Monday.
However, Trump's Twitter beef —-where he spewed nearly 20 tweets about NFL protests—- was a mismanagement of time some would say because of the dire condition of Puerto Rico.
Various reports state the hospitals are overcrowded with people, there are power outages in most locations and a dam breach is possible leading to more flooding and devastation already caused by Maria and Irma. There are food and clean water shortages on top of the fact that many have lost homes. Experts believe that Puerto Rico will take months to recover if not longer.
Many waited for Trump to comment on the island and he did Monday. Instead of offering words of encouragement, he chastised the commonwealth's government.
Texas & Florida are doing great but Puerto Rico, which was already suffering from broken infrastructure & massive debt, is in deep trouble..

…It's old electrical grid, which was in terrible shape, was devastated. Much of the Island was destroyed, with billions of dollars….

…owed to Wall Street and the banks which, sadly, must be dealt with. Food, water and medical are top priorities – and doing well. #FEMA

Twitter users did not take kindly to Trump's tweets pointing out unrelated issues and implying that the island deserved the havoc it received.
You should be ashamed! #PuertoRico is suffering & you’re slamming them about debt, Mr Bankrupt 10 Times! Also bankrupt of human decency! pic.twitter.com/k8rkdZMtSN

17 tweets on the NFL and NBA later, President Donald Trump finally addresses the devastation in Puerto Rico, still without power. https://t.co/toACYEgQc3

Dear NFL players, please go to Puerto Rico and kneel to trick @realDonaldTrump into focusing on what the fuck he should be focusing on.

Puerto Rico's hospitals have no more room. More people are going to die. Shut the fuck up about football, you inflamed asshole. https://t.co/E1sK8xAGiC

This past weekend's events prove that America's president is more troll than a leader. Pathetic.
