New polls are showing a decline in approval ratings of President Donald Trump’s second term, nearly a year after he began his second term in office. The economy, along with disagreements within the Republican party, are listed as the main reasons behind these recent findings.

Just 1 in 5 Americans now ‘strongly approve’ of Trump

Recent polls show that the number of Americans who strongly approve of Trump’s presidency has been declining, with around one in five expressing strong approval — the lowest level recorded during his first term, according to CNN.

Trump’s approval rating was recorded at 26%, a figure similar to his after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to an NPR/PBS News/Marist poll published on Wednesday. Similar figures were recorded in an NBC News-SurveyMonkey poll published over the weekend that shows Trump’s strong approval rating has dropped from 26% in April to 21% today.

A third Emerson College Polling survey shows Trump’s approval rating has dropped eight points since the start of his second term, according to The Hill. In January, 49% of voters approved of his presidency; today, that number is 41%, while 50% now disapprove of his job performance.

The NPR/PBS News/Marist poll places Trump’s overall job approval rating at 38%, his lowest since January 2025.

Trump’s approval rating regarding his handling of the economy has reached a new low

Trump’s handling of the economy appears to be the main factor weighing on his approval ratings this year. The economy is the main issue for 38% of voters, ahead of threats to democracy, healthcare and immigration, which were each recorded at 14%, according to the Emerson College Polling survey conducted in June 2025.

According to the NPR/PBS News/Marist poll, just 36% of Americans approve of his handling of the economy. Several groups that have largely supported Trump in the past are following this trend. Specifically, 49% of people living in rural areas and 48% of white women without college degrees disapprove of how he is handling the economy. Prices are a major concern for Americans, with 45% of respondents in this poll citing them as their top concern.

Republicans and Trump’s core base are starting to stand up against him

So far, Trump has benefitted from a strong core voting base and overwhelming support from the Republican Party. Recently, though, he’s faced some new challenges. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former hardcore supporter of Trump’s agenda, recently resigned from Congress. She was one of several House Republicans who, earlier this month, signed a petition to release the Jeffrey Epstein files, which prompted Trump to be “furious” with her, according to CNN.

In the Indiana Senate, Republicans voted against Trump when a majority decided to redraw their congressional map. They cast their vote despite Trump’s warning that he would withhold federal funds from the state if they didn’t obey him, according to Heritage Action.
