Sometimes the best way to get the word out is through creativity. The students of Wheatley Elementary School did just that when they decided to create a music video to speak out against gun violence in their schools and neighborhoods, WDRB reports.
Their teacher, Nyree Clayton-Taylor posted the video on Facebook, Monday.
Some of the lyrics state, "It's time to end the silence/Put a stop to all this violence/People hatin' and they're fightin'/Using guns and we're dyin'/It's time to start risin'/To the top we are climbin'/Gaining power from above/We're spreading California love."
The song and accompanying video, "California Love," were written and performed by the students of the Louisville, Kentucky school to specifically address recent violent incidents occurring in the city's Old California neighborhood.
Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman Allison Martin said the students had been working on the project all year, and Clayton-Taylor often encourages students to incorporate rap and writing into their expression. Clayton-Taylor was honored as the 2019 Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Shout-out to these brilliantly creative students!
