Lauryn Hill created a timeless, hip-hop and neo-soul masterpiece with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998.

In 1999, Hill’s Miseducation was nominated for 10 Grammy awards and took home five, including Album of the Year, setting a record as the first album by a hip-hop artist to receive the coveted award, according to the Grammys.

Shortly after, the controversy surrounding uncredited production for backup musicians on the album threw the artist into a whirlwind of lawsuits. Hill later stepped away from the industry to have and raise a family with Rohan Marley. Still, Miseducation has been credited as the inspiration for countless artists of today’s generation.

Hill has been very private about her time away from the music industry, but her children and family remain an ever-present motivation in her work and art.

Perhaps the offspring with the most recognizable name, Zion was stitched into the cultural fabric of the 1990s after his mother’s groundbreaking and intimate song about her firstborn. Hill’s “To Zion” remains a powerful first-person account of a young woman who decided to have a child despite outside suggestions that motherhood would ruin her life and future.

Zion reminded all of us that we were getting old by welcoming his own child into the world in 2017, according to Billboard.

Selah Marley has made a name for herself as a model working with labels such as Chanel, Calvin Klein, Kanye West’s Yeezy and Beyoncé's Ivy Park, according to The Undefeated.

Her family tree keeps her striving for more. Selah told The Undefeated, “I’m not trying to necessarily copy my mom; it’s in my DNA … it’s been passed down to me. I think she’s one of the greatest. But now, the funny thing is, I know who I am, but I was still like, ‘Yo – that’s Lauryn Hill; that’s my mom.'”

3. Joshua Marley

There’s not much known about Joshua other than that he is a low-key rap artist with seven songs on his Soundcloud. His music seems to be inspired by the singsong, autotunes of modern trap. In 2019, he was featured in a project with his brothers for Rag & Bone, a trendy clothing brand.

John Nesta Marley was born in 2003, in Kingston, Jamaica according to Bio Gossip. As a 17-year-old, he stays out of the spotlight but was featured in the (IN)SANE spring 2019 collection for menswear line The Brooklyn Circus.

Sarah Marley is Hill’s youngest daughter. She made an appearance in 2015 on stage during her mother’s first-ever performance in Nigeria, according to OkayAfrica.

6. Micah Hill

Micah Hill is the youngest of Hill’s children. He was born in July of 2011, which would make him almost nine years old, according to People. Within the aforementioned article, it was gleaned that Rohan was not Micah's father. Rohan congratulated her in a tweet dated July 25, 2011.

Though L Boogie has been more or less of a recluse since she stepped away from the spotlight, only recently returning to select stages (sometimes on time, sometimes not), it's awesome to see that her beautiful children continue to thrive in and out of the public eye.
