Dick Wolf, the television legend who brought us the procedural franchises Law & Order, FBI, the One Chicago universe and more, is the producer of his first streaming series with Prime Video‘s On Call.

The half-hour drama “follows a rookie and veteran officer duo as they go on patrol in Long Beach, California.”

Its official description reads in part, “a mixture of bodycam, dash-camera, and cellphone footage to create a cinema verité effect, the innovative series explores the morality of protecting and serving a community.”

The series stars Troian Bellisario as Officer Traci Harmon, Brandon Larracuente as Officer Alex Diaz, Eriq LaSalle as Sergeant Lasman, Lori Loughlin as Lieutenant Bishop and Rich Ting as Detective Sergeant Tyson Koyama. Monica Raymund guest stars in the first episode as Officer Maria Delgado.

Bellisario’s Harmon is “a seasoned, 12-year veteran and training officer with a strong moral compass that has defined her approach to policing, even if that puts her at odds with new law enforcement policies,” Brandon Larracuente’s Diaz is “an ambitious rookie who grapples with holding onto his optimistic outlook as he realizes the challenges he’ll face in today’s climate.”

The season ends with a showdown between Harmon and Smokey

Much of the season follows Harmon as she tries to avenge the death of her trainee, Delgado. It all comes to a head when Harmon and Smokey (Lobo Sebastian) find themselves on opposing sides. They once had a working relationship to maintain order between the police and the gang. However, the gang was upset that Smokey essentially gave up Maniac, the gang member who killed Delgado. The gang then turns on Smokey, attacking his daughter and stealing from his home and other locations. Harmon tries to stop Smokey from going on a warpath, but he refuses, leading to a final showdown where Smokey is taken into custody on drug charges and more. He considered killing himself but did not after Harmon told him that his daughter was gone.

Is Diaz able to move on from probation?

In the final showdown, Diaz is shot by Smokey’s daughter, Leona, whom he thought he could talk down. She is then shot and killed after attempting to deliver a kill shot to Diaz, telling him that they both need to protect their families. Because Diaz pursued Leona, Harmon tells Bishop that she would not recommend Diaz to pass his probation period. However, she wants him paired with her again for a second chance. Diaz is shocked and upset, especially after he praised Harmon during their briefing with Bishop. However, by the end of the finale, he seems to accept it and gives Harmon the “get out of jail free” card she gave him when he first started his probation.

Who blocked Harmon’s transfer?

Koyama, who trained Harmon, mentions a possible opening on his drug squad. After the showdown and Smokey’s arrest, Koyama informs Harmon that her transfer request was blocked. Initially, Harmon suspects Lasman due to their contentious relationship throughout the season and their past. The audience learns that Harmon once had an altercation with Lasman’s partner, who pushed her while aggressively handling a suspect. That partner was eventually fired, and Harmon believed Lasman resented her because others assumed she filed a complaint, though she never did.

When Harmon discovers her transfer wasn’t approved, she confronts Lasman, who denies blocking it. He reveals that Bishop was responsible. When Harmon asks Bishop why, Bishop explains that she had to block the transfer because Harmon illegally obtained information related to Delgado’s murder—an action that would have led to her termination under any other lieutenant.

Is ‘On Call’ renewed for Season 2? Here’s how the Season 1 Ending sets one up

On Call hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season. However, if it is, the Season 1 ending introduces several potential plot points. Diaz and Harmon are paired together again, suggesting another season of working “on call” as Diaz attempts to pass his second probation period. Harmon and Lasman’s final conversation hints at a more amicable relationship, which could become a key element in a second season. Additionally, there are suggestions that Bishop may be involved in questionable activities, including possible cover-ups, particularly since she was promoted over Lasman.
