Chicago residents Chantel Grant and Andrea Stoudemire were gunned down by unknown assailants while fighting against gun violence in their city.

BuzzFeed News reports the two mothers were part of community activist group Mothers/Men Against Senseless Killings (MASK). On the night of July 26, the activists were shot at the corner of 75th Street and Stewart Avenue where they frequented while trying to make the city's Auburn Gresham neighborhood safer.

According to police, Grant, 26, and Stoudemire, 36, were standing on the corner around 10 p.m. when a blue SUV pulled up and fired upon them. Both women suffered shots to the chest and were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“For mothers to be killed in a place where mothers go to seek safety and sisterhood, I take that as a personal threat,” Tamar Manasseh, founder of MASK, said at a press conference on Sunday. “Because when you come for one of us, you better believe they came for all of us."

Two other people were injured in the crossfire. A 58-year-old man and a 30-year-old man were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries, NBC News reported.

Chicago Police have yet to identify suspects connected to the shooting. As of Tuesday, authorities are asking community members to come forward with any available information they have.

“We have no evidence that we can point to that suggests the women were the intended targets,” police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. “We also have no evidence to the contrary.”

Both women are described as passionate activists who would stand up for anyone, especially young women in need. Grant and Stoudemire had four children each.

In the wake of the tragic killings, MASK's founder set up a GoFundMe campaign, raising funds for reward money. The campaign has surpassed its $5,000 goal and raised over $15,500.

"This is unacceptable," Manasseh said. "Enough is enough. I'm tired of being scared."
