Every female has experienced it. That extremely persistent guy that just can't take a hint. Despite blatantly being ignored or told, he can't fathom the idea of being unwanted. He lacks social cues and is oblivious to subtle rejection. I blame this crazy phenomenon on the male dating privilege.

Privilege is described as a special right or advantage. Living in the New York area, the male species definitely has the upper hand. There is an influx of single, good-quality, independent women that come in an exotic array of all shapes, sizes and colors. This saturation of beautiful women of substance leaves us at a major disadvantage. We exceed men far in numbers, meaning the demand for a good-quality man is high. On the opposing side, men can easily play the field.

This level of demand is often accompanied with cockiness. Successful men are aware that they are rare, and when pursuing a female, they assume that they can have any woman regardless of circumstance. A man once stated he had a chance with me simply because I was single. He didn't factor in that I may have not found him attractive, wasn't looking for a relationship or just honestly wasn't interested. This confidence level was followed by an annoying persistence. Despite making my lack of interest known, he simply didn't get it.

Societies false idea of what a woman is "supposed to be" also perpetuates this level of cockiness. The ideology that we aim to be wives and mothers by a certain age (false) has these men feeling like they're gods on earth. We are also taught to coddle them when it comes to rejection. A man literally pushed one of friends at a party because she refused to dance with him (seriously). This rash behavior and lack of maturity is the result of a subconscious privilege or entitlement that we have to swoon at their every beck and call.

So dear men, we are not that different from you. Not all of us are desperate for a ring and willing to settle for subpar treatment and a little bit of attention. A woman knows who she wants. If she ignores your calls or texts for days, she is not that into you. If she tells you she doesn't find you attractive, she is not that into you. If she does the brisk walk away when she encounters you, she is simply not that into you. So sir, please take your L and go.
