The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been in chaos for the last several weeks, but the biggest hit came Monday when NBC announced they will not air the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony as the organization makes an attempt at reform.

In a statement received by Shadow and Act, NBC says “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

This is a change in NBC’s prior statement (also received by S&A) on Friday, which said, “We believe that the plan presented charts a course for meaningful reform at the HFPA. We remain committed to encouraging the plan’s prompt implementation through productive conversations so that the HFPA can emerge a better and more inclusive organization.”

Given the fact that the major studios such as Netflix, Amazon and Warner Bros. have come out and said they are not satisfied with the HFPA’s reform plans so far, it looks like NBC may not have had any choice.

As has been reported previously on Shadow And Act, the governing body of the Golden Globes has been at the center of controversy for a variety of decisions, including not recruiting Black entertainment journalists to be among its ranks and overlooking performances by Black talent during the 2020-2021 awards season. The HFPA also angered viewers by placing American-made Minari in the foreign film category and for nominating performances and projects based on shmoozing campaigns rather than merit.

The HFPA initially said they would commit to adding Black journalists to the organization, but Time’s Up President and CEO Tina Tchen responded to the organization’s lackluster response by calling it purely “cosmetic.” This was before they set their guidelines for reform.

Now, filmmakers and actors have also come out against racist and sexist behavior by HFPA members and the organization continues to be in turmoil.
