Fresh off the word that a Batwoman series is in early development from Caroline Dries and Greg Berlanti at the CW, word has come that the higher-ups at the CW are looking to cast a lesbian actress to portray Gotham’s most prominent heroine.

According to TV Line, the future addition to the CW’s Arrowverse (the DC Comics shows), which currently consists of Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow, is seeking an out actress, open ethnicity, between the ages of 25 and 29 years old. For those unfamiliar with the character, Batwoman aka Kate Kane is a wealthy Gotham socialite armed with “a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind,” and is a “highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.”

The script will be penned by Caroline Dries, who will also executive produce the series. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter and Geoff Johns will also executive produce the series.

However, Kane’s introduction won’t be in her CW series. The character of Kate Kane will be introduced to audiences as a part of CW’s December, four-way crossover television event between Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

While Batwoman would be breaking new ground as the first LGBTQIA superhero lead, casting a black actress as Batwoman would send a more radical and political statement. With a casting notice for the role of Kate Kane going out very shortly, it would be wise for black LGBTIA actresses to get on the ball and audition, and the network and studio take note!
