Questlove is adding director to his resume of many talents with his debut film, Black Woodstock.

Black Woodstock will be a “feature documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival.” The festival took place in 1969 and featured Black musical legends including Nina Simone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone and others. Debuting one year after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, the festival, which garnered 300,000 people in attendance, was meant to celebrate Black unity and pride, which Black America needed.

Questlove hopes to provide light on the festival, which received little to no coverage at the time. His film will feature 40 hours of footage that has remained in storage for 50 years. The footage was shot by the late Hal Tulchin who directed TV specials such as Nina Simone – The Sound of Soul, The Wayne Newton Special and the 2015 documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?.
