Hill Harper, Sasheer Zamata, Angelica Ross and Whoopi Goldberg are set to lead the film adaptation of Jarid Manos novel, Ghetto Plainsman.

THR first reported the casting. The announcement of the novel’s adaptation was first released last year.

The novel centers around an Marcus, a young man “dealing with identity and self-hatred while falling into a world of prostitution and drug dealing in 1980’s and 90’s New York. He seeks redemption through his love of the American west, where he confronts an equally violent and fragile world.”

Golberg will play an androgynous drug lord running the operation that Marcus works for. Zamata will play his college friend “who tries to stop Marcus’s descent into chaos.” Ross will play Tiffany, a transgender woman who is a prostitute and Marcus’ neighbor who becomes “his fiercest ally.” Hill Harper will play Thomas, a lawyer and environmental activist, who is Marcus’ would-be love interest who “tries to not get close to the fire.”

The pivotal role of Marcus has not been cast yet.

Filming will begin late summer.

The screenplay was written by Carlton Jordan, Elizabeth Hunter and Jordan Walker-Pearlman. It will be produced by Walker-Pearlman and Jordan, and executive produced by Karenna Gore and Barry Johnson
