Several prominent Democrats have expressed support for Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and condemned what they believe is corruption in the state’s electoral system.

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) wants the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the controversial election.

“There should be a federal investigation. The Justice Department should be investigating that election to make sure it was fair and the decisions that were made were not to politically advantage someone, but to protect voters and the voting process,” he told Yahoo.

The New Jersey politician admitted he has “not been in the weeds” with the latest news about the election, but he did not shy away from demanding justice for Abrams.

“I think that Stacey Abrams’ election is being stolen from her, using what I think are insidious measures to disenfranchise certain groups of people,” he said.

Abrams is in a close gubernatorial race in Georgia. Her Republican rival, Brian Kemp, oversaw the election as secretary of state, and a number of issues including long waits at the polls were reported on Election Day.

Several lawsuits have been filed in recent days to ensure all absentee and provisional ballots are counted. As we reported, many of these suits have been successful; the date for vote certification was pushed back Tuesday, and a federal judge ordered roughly 1,000 absentee ballots that had been rejected to be included in official vote tallies.

Booker believes this calls for more federal intervention into the race.

“The Trump Justice Department should conduct an investigation into what happened,” Booker said. “That’s not just appearance of impropriety. To me, it’s the appearance of voter fraud, voter disenfranchisement, voter suppression.”

Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) agrees with Booker, according to NBC News.

"If Stacey Abrams doesn't win in Georgia, they stole it," Brown said on Wednesday while speaking at the National Action Network conference. "It's clear. It's clear. I say that publicly, and it's clear."

Brown brought up gerrymandering and voter suppression targeting people of color.

"[Republicans] win elections by redistricting and reapportionment and voter suppression and all the ways they try to scare people, particularly people of color,” he added.

Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton believes Abrams would already be governor if it weren’t for Kemp’s tactics.

“If she had a fair election, she already would have won,” Clinton said on Tuesday, according to Newsweek.

Kemp resigned from his secretary of state post after the November 6 elections. Abrams refused to concede and has continued to fight to have every ballot counted.

Cody Hall, Kemp’s press secretary, said Abram’s effort is an attempt to “steal” the election. Kemp currently has a very slight lead with 50.2 percent of votes.

"Since election night, hardworking Georgians have watched how the 'new' Democratic Party behaves," Hall said. "Stacey Abrams and her radical backers will stop at nothing to undermine democracy and attempt to steal this election to be Georgia's next governor."

Abrams' campaign has pushed back against this narrative and has accused the office of the secretary of state of deceiving voters.

Lauren Groh-Wargo, Abrams' campaign manager, said Monday, "The secretary of state office is lying about the number of votes cast, as well as the number of votes still to be counted. How do we know? We went to the counties directly to see the votes and count them for ourselves."
