Dennis Edwards, the former lead singer of The Temptations, passed away on Friday in Chicago, CBS Chicago reports. Edwards, 74, would have celebrated his 75th birthday this coming Saturday.

According to St. Louis Dispatch, Edwards died of complications from meningitis. The cause of death was confirmed by Edwards wife.

Edwards became the lead singer, and led the group to two Grammy-winning hits, including “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and “Cloud Nine,” after David Ruffin's departure from the Motown group,

The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1980. The group also received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 2013.

Edwards' first solo album, Don’t Look Any Further, hit No. 2 on the R&B charts. His second, Coolin' Out, had a R&B Top 30 hit in its title song.
