Though the 2020 SXSW Film Festival was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film festival’s awards have been given out as planned.

Jury members were able to still screen the films and choose their winners. In the Narrative Feature Competition, Angel Kristi Williams’ Really Love picked up a jury award. The film received a Special Jury Recognition for Acting for the performances of Kofi Siriboe and Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing. The romance film, chronicling a rising black painter (Siriboe) in a gentrifying Washington, D.C., also stars Naturi Naughton, Uzo Aduba and Michael Ealy.

In a recent interview with Shadow And Act, Felicia Pride, who co-wrote Really Love, spoke about pressing forward after the SXSW cancellation and what’s next for the film. “What Angel and I always say is that Really Love is the little film that could. It is going to come to the world as it wants and despite everything. Our lead creative team of Black women will continue to push for Really Love until it reaches the light of day and beyond, because that is what Black women do. So I rest assured on that,” she said.

Also, one of the festival’s special awards, the Louis Black “Lone Star” Award, gave two of its recognitions out to Channing Godfrey Peoples’ Miss Juneteenth and Bull, which stars Rob Morgan. Miss Juneteenth, which stars Nicole Beharie, won the overall Lone Star Award. Bull received the Lone Star Special Jury Recognition for Performance for Morgan. The Lone Star Award is an opt-in award named after SXSW co-founder/director Louis Black that honors films primarily shot in Texas and/or directed by a current resident of Texas.
