Thanks to an intrepid YouTuber, fans now have some more insight on what to expect from The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.

In the YouTube video “Penny Proud UNPLUGGED: An In-Depth Analysis of THE PROUD FAMILY” by Toonrific Tariq, he spoke with The Proud Family creator Bruce W. Smith, who talked about the upcoming reboot. The reboot talk was first rumored when Tommy Davidson, who voices patriarch Oscar Proud, talked about the series on a red carpet before it was officially announced.

“When Tommy said that, it wasn’t an official thing. But yeah, we’re coming back, and all the things you’re talking about now are things we’re going to go…really in on,” he said. “We’re happy about that.”

“We’re absolutely going to get into our own issues with our own race, and then deal with a lot of other racial issues that are really taboo,” he continued. “But we’re going to have fun with it. Because that’s what the show’s about and I’d think that us coming back, that’s what they would expect.”

From this, it sounds like the series will be more mature than the first series, which is fascinating since Disney+ has seemed resistant to more mature themes in its reboots. Case in point: the now-halted Lizzie McGuire reboot in which Hillary Duff revealed she wanted to tackle the adult issues an older Lizzie would encounter. Also, the Love, Simon spinoff series Love, Victor, which will feature LGBTQ relationships, was moved from the streaming service to Hulu because it wasn’t deemed family-friendly enough. But if The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is set to tackle some deep issues, this will make for some highly intriguing viewing.
