At the end of this month, the United States Postal Service will unveil a forever stamp in honor of jazz singer Sarah Vaughan. The unveiling will take place in Newark, New Jersey, the singer’s hometown.
The stamp art is an oil painting of Vaughan in performance based on a 1955 photograph by Hugh Bell. The cover side of the pane will feature a larger version of the stamp art, a list of some of Vaughan’s popular songs, and the Music Icons logo. Bart Forbes and Ethel Kessler were the artist and art director, respectively.
Born in 1924, Vaughan — whose name is often mentioned alongside Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie–was a Grammy award winning artist who got her start by winning a talent show at the Apollo Theater for her rendition of ‘Body and Soul’ in 1942.
