The school was placed on lockdown; the San Leandro school district described as the decision as "strictly a precautionary move in order to systematically inspect the school grounds," KTVU reports.
The disturbing discovery comes one the heels of #NationalWalkoutDay, in which thousands of students across the country walked out of their classroom to speak out to lawmakers in support of more effective gun control laws.
A San Leandro student, by the name of Julian posted live updates of the lockdown on Twitter under the user handle @Julian25L. He noted protesting classmates gathered for a picture holding a sign which read, "It Could Be Us Next," minutes before the lockdown was implemented.

update: the K9 units are here, and "apparently" two guns were found in the boys bathroom floor in one of the buildings but that so far is just a rumor— Julian (@Julian25L) March 14, 2018
KTVU further reports that although many students heard rumors of guns being found in the school, police did not recover any weapons in their inspections of the campus.
The district has assured that all students and staff are safe. Police confirmed that all other schools within the San Leandro Unified School District remain open at this time, per ABC News. However, San Leandro High School students were sent home early, and their school will remain closed tomorrow as a precaution against violence.
