Maco was hospitalized for two weeks following a gunshot wound
Maco, born Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., had been hospitalized since Dec. 12 following a gunshot wound to the head, per TMZ.
Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that Maco’s coma had worsened, and he went into critical condition. Hospital staff were unable to revive him.
Before his death, doctors struggled to get a brain scan in an attempt to flush the toxins out of Maco’s body.
There were earlier reports of his death circulating on social media following the incident.
As Variety reported, he was in a near-fatal car crash in 2016 that “resulted in skull fractures and a cracked vertebrae.”
A few years later, the rapper revealed he was battling “the flesh-eating disease necrotizing fasciitis, which subsequently led to depression,” per Variety.
Their report states that he said on Instagram at the time, “I was improperly treated for a minor rash and ended up with a skin eating disease for the last few months. This is the best it’s looked. I hope it gives someone hope. I’ve been going through this alone 90% of the time, without the support of the person I love, without most of my ‘friends,’ without anything but my own strength and God.”
Maco’s rap career took off in 2014 with his hit single, “U Guessed It.” He made XXL’s Freshman class with Vince Staples, K Camp and other rising talents the following year.
