Veteran news anchor Maurice DuBois is set to leave his role as co-anchor of CBS Evening News later this month amid Paramount’s merger with Skydance and leadership changes.
When is Maurice DuBois leaving ‘CBS Evening News’?
On Thursday, DuBois announced in an Instagram post that Dec. 18 would be his last day at the Paramount Skydance news division. He has spent over two decades at WCBS, rising through the ranks at the network. He has covered major news events throughout his career in broadcasting.
“It has been the Honor of a Lifetime. 21 years altogether, including my time at WCBS-TV in New York City. What a privilege! To be welcomed into your homes night after night, delivering the news / meeting extraordinary people and telling their stories. I’ll leave filled with gratitude, cherished relationships and amazing memories. A couple weeks to go; until then, see you on The CBS Evening News every night at 6:30,” DuBois captioned his Instagram post.
DuBois’ co-anchor, John Dickerson, announced in October that he would leave CBS Evening News at the end of 2025, according to Variety and Deadline.
What’s behind the overhaul at CBS News?
The recent changes at CBS News began after Skydance bought Paramount and hired opinion journalist Bari Weiss in October as the news division’s editor-in-chief. Since then, several network employees and journalists have spoken out anonymously about Weiss, the ongoing changes she plans to make to the network, and the fact that she has no experience in broadcast journalism, according to The Independent.
However, with both DuBois and Dickerson’s exits, there is no word on who could replace them. The pair has garnered high viewership with CBS Evening News and earned the trust of their millions of viewers throughout their respective careers at CBS. The show’s viewership and ratings had recently declined, trailing NBC Nightly News and ABC’s World News Tonight, per Variety.
Top anchors in CBS-owned local stations like Jim Donovan of Philadelphia’s KYW and Elliott Rodriguez at WFOR in Miami have also resigned from their positions.
In late October, Blavity reported that Gayle King would leave as co-anchor of CBS Mornings but may remain at the network in another position. King later denied the claim.
