Actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who’s best known for playing Bill Cosby‘s son Theo on The Cosby Show, has died at 54 years old.

According to People. Warner was vacationing with his family; he reportedly drowned while swimming. Per ABC News, Costa Rican National Police officials said that his official cause of death was asphyxia after being “caught by a high current in the water.” He was discovered Sunday afternoon near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, and was later identified by police.

“I know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of,” Warner told People in a 2023 interview.

He added, “We share a unique experience that keeps us lovingly bonded no matter how much time goes between seeing or hearing from each other.”

Post-The Cosby Show, Warner starred in several sitcoms and other series, including Malcolm & Eddie from 1996 to 2000. He also shared the screen with Tracee Ellis Ross on Reed Between the Lines, which ran for two seasons. His most recent notable roles include Chuck Cooper in Major Crimes, Julius Rowe in Suits and AJ Austin on The Resident.

In June 2024, Warner launched Not All Hood, a podcast with Candace Kelley, a five-time Emmy-nominated journalist and legal analyst.

“It’s been an interesting experience for me, because it’s a place where I feel safe enough to be able to be as vulnerable as I allow myself to be,” Warner told People in May 2024.

“When we talk about the Black community, we tend to speak of it as a monolith when the reality is there are so many different facets of the Black community,” he added, “and we wanted to have a space where we can really explore, discuss, and acknowledge all of those different aspects.”
