Macy’s is closing 66 locations in its “Bold New Chapter” plan to focus on high-performing stores and scale back on underperforming locations.

According to Axios, the retail giant said liquidation sales would start in January for 8-12 weeks for full-line and small-format stores as they prepare to close their doors.

What is the Bold New Chapter strategy?

The Bold New Chapter plan aims to achieve sustainable, profitable growth by closing 150 underperforming stores over three years and investing in 350 key locations through fiscal 2026, according to a news release.

Macy’s CEO speaks out

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc, said in a news release statement.

Since launching the “Bold New Chapter” strategy, Macy’s pilot stores, dubbed the First 50, have achieved soaring sales and record-high customer satisfaction in three consecutive quarters.
