Bringing new meaning to the phrase “collecting quality coin," the U.S. Mint announced that it would be releasing a series of commemorative $100 gold coins for the 225th anniversary of Lady Liberty.
The first of the series, and of its kind, feature a black woman with her hair twisted and pulled into a bun and a regal smile on her face.

The other side of the mintage will feature the patriotic bald eagle in flight.

In the future, the U.S. Mint plans to release more diverse coins reflecting the “cultural and ethnic diversity of the United States." Asian-American, Hispanic-American and Indian-American women will all get their chance to shine on the limited edition coin.
Only one other circulating coin features a woman of color and that’s the $1 Sacagawea. So the news of this release is not only major, it’s historically mind-blowing.
The coin is slated to be released April 6.
How's that for 24k magic?
