Kendrick Lamar's latest album DAMN went No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and has produced rave reviews. The Grammy award winning artist and Compton native has made quite the name for himself. Therefore, it's only right that in his latest cover story with Rolling Stone, they'd ask about certain statements he made throughout the album including his “wack artist” line on “ELEMENT.”

“A wack artist uses other people’s music for their approval,” Lamar answered. “We’re talking about someone that is scared to make their own voice, chases somebody else’s success and their thing, but runs away from their own thing. That’s what keeps the game watered-down.”

“I watch a lot of good artists go down like that because you’re so focused on what numbers this guy has done, and it dampers your own creativity,” he elaborates.

When it comes to ghost writers, he also says that your way with words determines your success. “I called myself the best rapper. I cannot call myself the best rapper if I have a ghostwriter,” he mentioned. “If you’re saying you’re a different type of artist and you don’t really care about the art form of being the best rapper, then so be it. Make great music. But the title, it won’t be there.”

Some people are thinking this may be a stab at Drake. The two have been accused of having a subliminal war for years now, and they also have been noted to have a complicated relationship.

However, when asked about his favorite Drake song in the interview, he was cool answering "Favorite Drake song [chuckles]. I got a lot of favorite Drake songs. Can't name one off the back. … He has plenty."

Either way it goes, Kendrick Lamar and Drake are a big part of the culture. Undoubtedly two of the biggest influencers of this generation. Only time will tell.
