Mississippi Valley State University’s band is being criticized for its decision to participate in the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade next month.
The HBCU‘s band of musicians was invited to participate in President-elect Donald Trump’s Inauguration Day celebration. A press release published on the Mississippi Valley State University’s website gave more insight into the reason behind their acceptance.
“This historic invitation highlights the band’s legacy of excellence and cultural significance, showcasing the university and Mississippi’s rich heritage globally,” the release stated. “This invitation continues MVSU’s tradition of groundbreaking national performances. In 1965, the band became the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) ensemble to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade. They returned to Pasadena in 1968 and performed in President Richard Nixon’s inaugural parade on Jan. 20, 1969. These milestones reflect the band’s enduring legacy as cultural ambassadors for Mississippi and the HBCU community.”
It continued, “The total cost of this historic trip, including travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment, is approximately $350,000. MVSU is committed to ensuring that every student can participate regardless of financial circumstances. The university asks alums, supporters, and the community to support this monumental endeavor.”
To help accomplish this, the team created a GoFundMe page to raise $70K. The organization “is seeking funds to acquire instruments, uniforms, provide scholarships, and get other essential resources” to make it to Washington, D.C., and for the “continued development” of the students in the music program.
Unsurprisingly, many across social media are criticizing the school’s decision: “Let’s be honest not all money are notoriety is good. Sometimes you have to walk away and this is one of those times,” one shared.
“No Valley..Hell Nawl..This ain’t it..not raising money to go before the Klan Rally..raise money for the betterment of Valley but not to entertain the MAGA faithful,” another person tweeted.
“Hell no! What kind of HBCU would ask for this knowing very well how the incoming administration views HBCUs, its staff & students? Have y’all been listening or watching ?There is a march in DC the same day commemorating MLK. Take a bus to that,” someone else commented.
While some aren’t happy about the band’s choice, others are rooting for the band to meet their fundraising goal.
“This is great! How amazing and what an absolute honor,” one person wrote.
“Donated. I wish you guys good luck. It’s an honor to be invited to the White House and you’re going to do great,” another X user said.
“Wonderful! The World will get to see their incredible talent and excellence. Well done. A lot to be proud of. Congratulations,” a third person commented.
MVSU President Dr. Jerryl Briggs shared his sentiments in a statement that supported the band program’s choice.
“This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi,” Dr. Briggs disclosed. “It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community. This participation allows students to engage in the peaceful transition of power and gain global exposure while celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary.”
