Two black-owned tech startups are more than half a million dollars richer after winning a pitch competition hosted by 43North. The Buffalo, New York-based business plan competition designed to elevate the profile of minority and women business owners is rightfully celebrated as one of the countries premier rewards of tech innovation. “43North continues to drive Buffalo’s resurgence by showcasing the breadth of opportunity and resources available in Western New York and attracting top-notch entrepreneurs and businesses from across the globe,” said New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. “We welcome these forward-thinking, creative men and women to New York and look forward to all of the 2017 43North winners supporting the continued growth of Buffalo’s economy.”
Squire and Femi Secrets, both black-owned, were among the eight winners of the 2017 competition.
Squire – Co-founded by Dave Salvant and Songe LaRon, Squire is a business management platform for barbershops. The technology allows barbers engage virtually with their customers to process bookings and payments, and market their business through Squire’s “barbershop discovery” capabilities.
Headquartered in New York City, with another office in Buffalo, New York, Squire operates in over 25 cities across the United States. The business founded by Dave Salvant and Songe LaRon secured a whopping $650,000 in prize money.
