Jason Momoa is coming back to the DC live-action universe as a different comic book character.
Momoa, who originally starred as Aquaman in the now-defunct DCEU, is now set to play Lobo in James Gunn’s DC live-action universe. Momoa will star opposite House of the Dragon alumna Milly Alcock in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Alcock plays the titular hero.
According to Deadline, Momoa wrote on Instagram how he feels Lobo is a role he was born to play.
Momoa on returning to DC
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but [Lobo] was always my favorite,” he wrote in a caption that referenced an earlier interview. “I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.'”
Momoa said in that interview that if DC called and wanted him to play Lobo, he’d say “f**k yeah.” He added, “[I]f they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.” The Instagram post has a caption written by Momoa, stating, “They called.”
Who is Lobo in DC Comics?
Lobo, a villain-turned-antihero, embodies the rebellious spirit of 1980s heavy metal culture. Similar to Elvira’s glam rock persona from the same era, Lobo’s aesthetic mirrors his chaotic and destructive nature. Originating from the utopian planet of Czarnia, Lobo stands out with his love of violence, dark humor, and indulgent lifestyle. His moral code is questionable, as he famously wiped out his entire species for pleasure, yet he operates with a twisted sense of honor.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film also stars Matthias Schoennaerts and Eve Ridley.
