Prime Video has announced a Season 2 renewal for the mystery thriller series, We Were Liars.

The first season, from Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie, was based on E. Lockhart’s novel of the same name.

Per Prime Video, Season 1 followed “Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her tight-knit inner circle, nicknamed the Liars, during their summer escapades on her grandfather’s New England private island. The Sinclairs are American royalty—known for their good looks, old money, and enviable bond—but after a mysterious accident changes Cadence’s life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide.”

“We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans,” said Plec and Mackenzie in a statement. “The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up.”

“MacKenzie and Plec have big, big plans for Season Two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen —  and a lot of surprises as well,” added E. Lockhart.

“The season two renewal of We Were Liars is yet another testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent,” said Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television. “This series, which Julie and Carina crafted so beautifully from E. Lockhart’s beloved books, absolutely deserves a deeper dive. And we’re grateful to Amazon MGM for their collaboration and partnership.”

“Delving deeper into the thrilling world of E. Lockhart’s novels with a second season of We Were Liars was a no-brainer,” said Laura Lancaster, Head of Co-Production and Ongoing Series, Amazon Studios MGM Studios. “Along with our talented cast, showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie did a marvelous job bringing the novels to life for our global Prime Video customers, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for Season Two.”

Who starred in ‘We Were Liars’ Season 1?

Season 1 starred Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair Eastman, Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil, Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield, Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis; alongside Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair, Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair, Candice King as Bess Sinclair, Rahul Kohli as Ed Patil, and David Morse as Harris Sinclair.

We have an idea of what Season 2 could be about

It is unclear if Season 2 will continue the story from Season 1, but if the Season 1 finale is anything to go by, Season 2 could be a prequel to Season 1 that dives into another family mystery.

At the end of Season 1, Carrie returns and has not been sober. She has been seeing the ghost of Johnny during that summer. Carrie says that he thought Johnny left, and he tells her, “I don’t think I can.”

Lockhart told TVLine that this end is similar to the opening of the second novel following We Were Liars, which is a prequel called Family of Liars. “That final scene with Carrie and Johnny is very close to the opening of my second book in the We Were Liars universe, which is called Family of Liars,” she said. “Really, it’s a tip forward into Season 2 — should we get a Season 2 — but it’s also a tip forward to the book that comes after We Were Liars. We all hope for a Season 2, and I know the showrunners have all kinds of plans.”

When plans came together for the show to be developed, the producers also got the TV rights for Family of Liars, as well as another Lockhart novel, Again Again, as Variety reported.

Season 1 was written and executive produced by co-showrunners Plec and McKenzie. Executive producers were  Emily Cummins for My So-Called Company, Brett Matthews, Pascal Verschooris and Lockhart.

The series is from Universal Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
